Prince Mired, UN deputy secretary-general discuss advancing disability rights in Jordan

HH Prince Mired bin Raad, Chief Chamberlain and President of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (HCD), and United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed on Wednesday discussed ways to boost cooperation on advancing disability rights.

UN Resident Coordinator in Jordan Sheri Ritsema-Anderson and Chief of Staff to the Deputy Secretary-General Saada Hassan also attended the meeting, held in Amman, according to an HCD statement.

Prince Mired reaffirmed Jordan’s commitment to disability rights, highlighting the Kingdom’s constitutional foundations and steady progress in developing inclusive legislation and national programmes, noting that Jordan has placed disability rights high on the national agenda.

Mohammed praised Jordan’s regional and international leadership in this area, particularly its selection as co-host of the Third Global Disability Summit 2025, underscoring the need for stronger multilateral cooperation to ensure inclusive policies are implemented across all sectors.

HCD Secretary-General Muhannad Azzeh outlined key reforms, including the 2017 disability rights law and ongoing legislative alignment with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

He also noted efforts to monitor compliance and support public institutions and civil society through technical expertise.

Talks during the meeting also highlighted the launch of the National Academy for Inclusive Education and Jordan’s active role in shaping the Amman-Berlin Declaration, which calls on countries to dedicate at least 15 per cent of international cooperation projects to disability inclusion.

Participants reviewed other national initiatives, including inclusive education strategies, accessible tourism planning, and efforts to enhance electoral participation and transition from institutional to community-based care for persons with disabilities.
