HH Prince Mired, President of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities met with the Director General of Roya Media Group, Eng. Faris Al-Sayegh, to discuss the role of the media in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities in Jordan.
The meeting came as part of meetings conducted by HH with media institutions, which aim to activate the role that media institutions can maintain in dealing with disability issues by providing objective media materials from a human rights perspective far from stereotypes.
HH Prince Mired, stressed the need to shed more light on the issues of the rights of persons with disabilities and to place them on the top of the priority list of media organizations, pointing to the importance of addressing the issues and the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in an objective and practical manner.
HH Prince Mired, expressed his thanks to the Vision Media Group for hiring a media person with a visual disability (blind) as a broadcaster among the media cadres working in the channel, hoping will follow this experience other media institutions.
The HCD’s Secretary-General Dr. Muhannad Alazzeh, reviewed some of the challenges and negative models that are covered in the media in general, especially in drama, which entrench false stereotypes about people with disabilities with the issues of persons with disabilities objectively, and to encourage the media professionals working for it to make in-depth media reports on disability issues, in addition to including a list of correct terms in the rights of persons with disabilities within the channel’s editorial policy.
Al-Sayegh expressed the readiness of the Roya News Group to include training programs in the Roya Academy with materials that include the persons with disabilities, media coverage methods of the disability sector and the correct terminology.
